Carved from Memory
by PanteaAEW
This piece is about loss, and the kind of love that does not end when someone is gone. The old man carves a child from wood, trying to bring back someone life has taken from him. In reality, we often hold on to photographs, belongings, and memories of those we’ve lost not because they can fill the emptiness, but because some absences can never truly be filled. Sometimes, art is not a way to forget. It is a way to hold, once again, someone we can no longer touch. The Poem & Music By Me In the silent workshop, amidst the scent of wood, An old man remained, with memories, once good. With a saw in his hands, he carved the fallen tree, From those pieces, he shaped a child he longed to see. He carved the eyes, then shaped the hands and feet, Hoping to bring back a memory, a voice so sweet. He held the little doll, in silence, close and tight, And carried it to the room, toward the familiar bed that night. He took the red hat, placed it on his head, As if the, child had returned from the dead. But the room was silent, and the bed stood all alone, While black candles flickered beside a picture frame of stone. The old man made a wooden child to take his place, So he could hold once more the one he missed, in his embrace.
